Standard Operating Protocols Manual
- Radio Operations

- GENERAL:
- Find out where the fire is.
- Make sure the firefighters know where the fire is and how to get
there.
- Let all firefighters know what type of fire is reported.
- Phone the RCMP.
- IN TOWN FIRE:
- Stay on radio channel #1.
- Send trucks to fire destination.
- Radio to trucks - nearest hydrant location.
- Access procedures book.
- Access Dangerous Goods Book.
- Proceed to fill out call sheet.
- Make sure that a radio operator is at the radio till all equipment
has returned to the fire hall, or released by the incident commander.
- OUT OF TOWN FIRES:
- Stay on Channel #1 until geography requires that you need to go to
channel #2.
- To switch channels, make a general radio alert (get a response from
all units) and say that you are changing to channel ___. Make the
change and get confirmation from all units that they are on the new
channel with you.
- Direct truck to Fire location.
- Access procedures book.
- Access Dangerous Goods Book.
- Proceed to fill out call sheet.
- Make sure that a radio operator is at the radio till all the units
have returned.
- GENERAL NOTES:
- Start Tape Recorder.
- Keep radio transmissions short and to the point.
- Keep a written record of all procedures noted to you and the time
when they occurred.
- Normal Radio channels are:
- Ch #1 = Magrath Fire Department & Town.
- CH #2 = M.D. of Cardston & Mutual channel for Magrath and
Cardston fire fighting.
- CH #3 = County of Lethbridge and Coaldale.
