Magrath Lions Clubs 65th Charter Night 2003
Tues May 20, 2003

To celebrate the anniversary of our club charter [May 1938] 65 years ago, we sponsored our "Lions Clubs Charter Night" program in Magrath, Alberta on Tuesday May 20, 2003 at 7:00pm at the Magrath Seniors Center.

On May 18, 1938 the Magrath Lions Club was officially created (or 'chartered') with 22 charter members. On Tuesday May 20th the Magrath Lion's Club celebrated it's past 65 years of serving the Town of Magrath with their "65th Charter Night" banquet at the Magrath Senior Citizens Center. Lions and interested guests from around the region including Cardston, Raymond, Stirling, Lethbridge, Pitcher Butte, Calgary, and even one from Australia were in attendance.

Local dignitaries included our own Mayor Wayne Harris and his good wife. Many Lion dignitaries were also present including our current District Governor Lion Gail Witherspoon and her husband Lion John. Interestingly, Lion Gail lived in Magrath and attended school here for a while with her family when her father was stationed here as an RCMP officer.

The featured guest speaker for the night was Lion Judge Brian Stevenson of Calgary. Judge Stevenson currently serves as the Assistant Chief Judge of the Criminal Division of the Provincial Court of Alberta. He is also a long time Lion and a former International Lions Club President (1987-88). As a final surprise, Lion Ken Balderson was presented with a special Lion award named after our guest speaker .. the Judge Brian Stevenson Fellowship award.

Highlights:

  • Banquet catered by Vinnie Jensen and staff of Magrath, Alberta.
  • Mayor Wayne Harris and spouse were in attendance representing our fine town.
  • Guest Speaker .. our invited guest speaker was Past International President Judge Brian Stevenson. Wow!
  • Several Lions Club representatives attended, including our own District Governor Gail Witherspoon and her husband Cabinet Secretary-Treasurer--PCC John Witherspoon, along with half a dozen other current and former district governors from Southern Alberta regions.
  • We ended up with 58 Lions and interested guests in attendance at this event - as well as a seeing eye poodle named Reno.
Will post photos on this page as they become available. :) Lion Roger
