It was a busy July. We entered a float in the parade and won 2nd place in the Club category. Lots of fun. We also organized a successful Lions Club Pancake fund-raiser at the Magrath Seniors Center, thanks to the efforts of all. Elizabeth Olsen pitched in and organized a great volunteer crew this year, including: Jay and Joyce Johnson, Addie and Lois Bourne, Kent and Pat Wood, Morrie and Ila Tuff, Kathy Beck, Shirley Clifton, Elizabeth Olsen, Alyssa and Riley Erickson, Ali and Justice Pilgrim, Shirley Clifton, Jeff and Deanna Bingley, Barb Balderson, Donna Thompson (did I forget anyone?), as well as Lions Roger and Shauna Davies, Lawrence Papworth, and Tom Spackman. We served some 150 people from 7-9am. At 2pm we had the Mayor come cut the ribbon on our upgraded Magrath Lions Playground. |

Update June 2008 Magrath, AB A great big thank you to all who helped getting this project completed. It was a big job, but we are so excited it turned out so fun! We counted over 220 hours of donated labor/equipment valued at $2670. Thank you again!
Magrath Lions Club
We started fund-raising for this project several years ago but only recently have we acquired enough funding to actually implement it. We have been collecting tools, knocking on doors for volunteers and sending letters to various local groups. We disassembled the old wood structure in May and June and pulled out the old posts with assistance from Dennis Butler and his tractor. Lions Tom Spackman and Roger Davies marked out the corner pins and on Monday 16 Jun 2008 the rains had finally subsided enough for Fred Holzwarth [Fred's Excavating' to dig out the site for us with Rod Ririe and company [Ririe Pit Run and Gravel] to haul away the dirt. On Thursday afternoon we received the trailer loaded with parts [from Blue Imp via GPI and Exalta] and Thursday evening we started hauling tools over to the site. Early Friday morning (7:30am) we measured and marked where the 40 odd holes were to be drilled under supervision of the installer Rob [of GPI Outdoor Design]. Despite being a work day, we were able to get George Reil, Ralph Shipley, Andy and Carla Beres, Addie Bourne, Ashley Clifton, Bonnie Hirsche, and Roger and Shauna Davies to volunteer that day. Dustin Ririe spent all morning drilling the holes and moving dirt away for us. Lunch was thoughtfully provided via 1st Choice at their Customer Appreciation BBQ. By supper time, we were about 80% in place, almost ready for the cement and gravel.

Magrath, AB (26 Apr 2008 2:30pm): 6,671 pounds as of 29 Apr 2008 with estimated value over $13,000. Wow! Thank you for supporting the Magrath and Area Community Food Drive, sponsored by all local churches on behalf of the Lethbridge Food Bank headed up by myself (Lion Roger Davies) this year (filling in for Arne Jensen who was out of the country). Happily, Food Drive 2008 was a great success! After a cold snowy week, sunny Saturday morning countless (thousands and thousands .. maybe even three hundred) community volunteers helped pick up donations and load our trailers as youth leaders, parents, and their high school helpers drove door to door to pick up donations and bring them to the loading area behind the Magrath Senior's Center. I had put Welling in charge of the weather this year and they really came through.

We are saddened to report the unexpected passing of two members of the Magrath Lions Club in March 2008 - Lion Bob Clifton (75) and former Lion Jim Ririe.
Lion Bob passed away on Friday March 28, 2008 at the Raymond Hospital. He was a past club president and with his good wife Shirley, long time supporters of our club activities. He was especially looking forward to the new lion park playground equipment (to be installed Jun 2008), having assisted in the planning and fund-raising for it over the past several years. The funeral service was held at the Magrath Garden Place Chapel on Tuesday April 1, 2008 at 2pm.
Lion Jim passed away earlier this same month after a long stay in the hospital. After the passing of his wife he retired from the club due to age and health concerns, first moving out of their home in Magrath to stay at the Diamond Willow Lodge and later moving to long term care outside of Magrath. His funeral was held at the Magrath Stake Center in March 2008.
We will miss them both. |
