OCC Christmas Box Project 2009

What a great response! We recorded donations of over 125 boxes from our little town. Thank you!

Background: Give a gift that will mean much more than most of the presents you're about to give this year .. This one is for an individual needy child who will likely have no other gift at all this Christmas.

For many years the Magrath United Church has been sending lovingly packed Shoe Boxes filled with necessities and small gifts to children in Central and/or South America.

This year The Lions Club is happy to partner with them and hopefully get the whole community more fully involved. Information for packing boxes can be found online at samaritanspurse.ca/occ/ or handouts at the Magrath Pharmacy or Westwind News office.

What a fun activity for a few people to get together and pack boxes. or as family activity or you might join with several friends to pack a box. Here's a great chance for a school class, club, group etc. to make a difference for someone at Christmas. Adapts to any budget, just invite more people to work with you!

If you can't pack a box, you might donate $7 for shipping the box overseas to someone donating the box. There's something for everyone to do! Check with Darlene Holzwarth.

Use your own box, or pick one up at the Pharmacy or Westwind News Office. Then deliver it back filled and ready to go by November 19th. We will deliver it to the drop off in Lethbridge.

'Through great support from volunteers and donors, the third annual [correction: actually the fourth annual for the town - but the third year the Magrath Lions have coordinated the event;] community Food Drive in Magrath gathered 5,042 pounds of food for the needy.

Roger Davies of the Magrath Lions Club kept an eye on how the food drive proceeded, with help from church groups in town with picking up bags of donations from people’s homes.

“We gathered a full trailer and a half. Everything went well, the weather was good, lots of people were involved, all went well that way.” [I'm so quotable,eh]

The Lethbridge Food Bank is very appreciative of the support from Magrath. Executive director Mary DeCecco says, “It’s a very significant donation, over $10,000 in food. It’s a huge help for the food bank and seeing a higher volume in clients it came at the perfect time.”

Magrath Playground 2009

We have finished the installation of the new fence around the Magrath Lions Playground. It looks great and should last quite a while - the previous fence was around for over 25 years and this one is a stronger grade fence. We are also requesting quotes for additional Blue Imp stand alone play items for the playground as well as for metal Shade Structure Tables. Lion Shauna is hoping to install before the end of the summer.
