Food Drive Results 2008

E-mail Print
Magrath, AB (26 Apr 2008 2:30pm): 6,671 pounds as of 29 Apr 2008 with estimated value over $13,000. Wow! Thank you for supporting the Magrath and Area Community Food Drive, sponsored by all local churches on behalf of the Lethbridge Food Bank headed up by myself (Lion Roger Davies) this year (filling in for Arne Jensen who was out of the country). Happily, Food Drive 2008 was a great success! After a cold snowy week, sunny Saturday morning countless (thousands and thousands .. maybe even three hundred) community volunteers helped pick up donations and load our trailers as youth leaders, parents, and their high school helpers drove door to door to pick up donations and bring them to the loading area behind the Magrath Senior's Center. I had put Welling in charge of the weather this year and they really came through.

The two trailers were then taken to the Lethbridge Food Bank (on 2nd Ave) and unloaded (by 12:30pm in record time) by .. our drivers Calvin Heggie and Lee Stringam, with Wes Olsen (LDS Stake YM), Roger Davies (me - Magrath Lions), Rev Ward (United Church), and other volunteer helpers Ken Lowry, Arlen and Laurel Bennett, Russell and Bryanna Bennett and two nice ladies from the Food Bank helping unload the trailers (see photos).

I won't have the totals till next week but by my estimates we most likely bested last years totals. Thanks to everyone back in Magrath, Welling and Spring Coulee and area for the donations and for all the helpers that quickly and efficiently loaded up and unloaded the trailers.

Thanks also to Arne Jensen's training for the past year's drives - everything went very smoothly. Mayor Murphy printed up the flyers for us (at no charge). Bags were provided by the LDS Church and from Magrath Pharmacy and the Home Hardware. Boxes were donated by Magrath Pharmacy as well. The LDS Stake youth groups (parents and high school students) prepared and handed out the flyers door to door and organized and did the pickups - too many to mention individually. All I had to do is take the flyers and bags to Carol Tidmarsh (LDS Stake YW) to hand out, and put the big sign up at the Town Office Building, update the websites, and reassure Pres Alan Dudley (LDS Stake) and Jim Blumel (LDS HC) that everyone else knew what they were doing. And it was just that easy. And again, many thanks to all!

p.s. We always have a few homes that wanted to donate but were somehow missed. We are still accepting donations for the next week or so - call Roger Davies at home 388-4332 or at the Magrath Pharmacy 758-3001 to arrange pickup or just drop off at the Pharmacy when you are in town. I can't wait for next year's drive ..
