Update June 2008 Magrath, AB A great big thank you to all who helped getting this project completed. It was a big job, but we are so excited it turned out so fun! We counted over 220 hours of donated labor/equipment valued at $2670 with total project cost at just under $40,000. Thank you again!

We started fund-raising for this project several years ago but only recently have we acquired enough funding to actually implement it. We have been collecting tools, knocking on doors for volunteers and sending letters to various local groups. We disassembled the old wood structure in May and June and pulled out the old posts with assistance from Dennis Butler and his tractor. Lions Tom Spackman and Roger Davies marked out the corner pins and on Monday 16 Jun 2008 the rains had finally subsided enough for Fred Holzwarth [Fred's Excavating' to dig out the site for us with Rod Ririe and company [Ririe Pit Run and Gravel] to haul away the dirt. On Thursday afternoon we received the trailer loaded with parts [from Blue Imp via GPI and Exalta] and Thursday evening we started hauling tools over to the site. Early Friday morning (7:30am) we measured and marked where the 40 odd holes were to be drilled under supervision of the installer Rob [of GPI Outdoor Design]. Despite being a work day, we were able to get George Reil, Ralph Shipley, Andy and Carla Beres, Addie Bourne, Ashley Clifton, Bonnie Hirsche, and Roger and Shauna Davies to volunteer that day. Dustin Ririe spent all morning drilling the holes and moving dirt away for us. Lunch was thoughtfully provided via 1st Choice at their Customer Appreciation BBQ. By supper time, we were about 80% in place, almost ready for the cement and gravel.

On Saturday, more helpers arrived: Jim Bishop, Wes Balderson, Lion Lawrence Papworth, Jeff Bingley, George Harker, Arlen Bennett, Steve Brinton, Duane Thomson, Elders Barton and Farnsworth, Lion Devar Dahl, Rick Humphreys, Ken and Don Law, plus Bryanna Bennett and Bryanna Miller. We poured the cement at 10am and Rod and Dustin Ririe hauled in and moved the gravel in place with their big machines. The structure was 99% complete by 3pm. Thanks to Arlen Bennett and Ryan Beck who stayed to help clean up, moving the cardboard, plastic, and wood from the shipping crate and a big load of old cement pulled from the old site. Ashley Clifton and Lion Roger [me] finished tool cleanup and final touches on the rail spacing. All done by 7:30pm on Saturday. [with only an 'i' missing on the alphabet scramble and a 15in bar lost in translation. Yay! We were blessed with safety - used 2 bandaids and minor bumps and bruises. Also blessed with great weather: no rain, no wind, and lots of sun. I think it turned out well.

Background Jun 20-21, 2008 Magrath, AB: We will be needing volunteers to assist in the Magrath Lions Club Playground upgrade installation. See information in Westwind Jun 12th issue p.12 for request for assistance and 3D design image. Information packets went to various local church groups on 6 Jun. Contractors are working on preparing the site for that day as well. If you are available any time on Fri Jun 20 and/or Sat Jun 21 contact a member of the Magrath Lions Club, we can use all the help we can get.Image

Work Notes: Image

Fred Holzwarth will be doing the excavation. Rod Ririe will haul top soil away for us. Ririe Pit Run or LaFarge is providing the washed pea gravel (must call 1 week prior to confirm order). SW Concrete will provide cement Sat 10am.

To do:
- locate request .. scheduled for 10 Jun, tickets to be faxed to Magrath Pharmacy. Done
- town? snow fencing and posts, post pounder .. need to put temp fence between installation site and existing swing area. Just bought temp fencing from Totem.
- demo? progressing. need 1/2" wrenches and #2 robertson screw drivers, hammers, people to disassemble existing structure. est 15-20 man hours (half done)
- 12" auger, confirm with Rod Ririe for 9am Fri. Done. - check with coop or home hardware for use of forklift [not needed]. Had to manually pull items from trailer vs forklift. - fence? ask LP to organize parts for replace fencing at front and repair of balance of fencing. Later, eh. - bob cat? poss .. R Thomson, D Edwards, C Hatch, or C Harris .. other? Got Riries to do it.
- confirm use of power - neighbor properties. Yes, but really didn't need power much. - day of install .. need 9/16 wrenches [not needed], wheelbarrows, sledge hammers, etc. The required equipment list was old .. did not need open ended nor allen wrenches nor half the things they listed. Hmmm. - to be continued .. nope, all done.
