Magrath Lions Park Upgrade Project 2002-2003 'Current Status'

Next Park Meeting: Tuesday Mar 7, 2006 7:00pm at Magrath Lions Hall .. see you there! [See alsoLions Park News / Donation Request form PD]

We built the children's playground in the west end of town several years ago, with a series of wooden play structures, large metal swings and carousel, teeter-totters, etc. The 'Lions Park' sign was added in 1999. Swing seats were replaced in 1999. Ten trees were planted along the west edge of the park in 2000. The fence along south edge of park was rebuilt in 2001. This facility is the only one on the west side of town and is well frequented by the 2-9 year old set. Other playground structures within the Town of Magrath exist, but are geared toward older elementary school children (ages 5-12+).

Magrath Lions Park Upgrade Project
In 2002-2003 we re-started fundraising for the replacement of the aging wooden play structures. We invite interested community leaders and citizen volunteers to collaborate with us in the preparation, design, and installation of factory-engineered and tested playground components [ Volunteer Here ].

In addition to requests for supporting donations from local businesses and individuals, we will seek additional funding from other institutions. New! If you wish to make a donation online, use the Donate button below to allow you to support our cause via the Secure PayPal online processing system, or just contact Roger Davies or any other member of the Magrath Lions Club. Thank you for your interest and support.

Notes from last meeting: Roger Davies reporting. On Thursday November 25 an introductory meeting to discuss plans for the proposed upgrade to the Magrath Lions Park. Several interested residents attended in spite of the inclement weather and many others have provided input and promised interest and support to the project.

Background: The park, located near the corner of 2nd Ave South and 2nd Street West in Magrath, was created by the Magrath Lions back in the 70's after much hard work from the Lions Club and other interested volunteers and featured a large swing set, a small climbing monkey bar set, the carousel, teeter totters, and a wooden play structure and a fenced perimeter. The land was donated to the town for this purpose and the Town of Magrath provides general insurance coverage and waters and maintains the grass areas. It has been and is being well used by the younger set, both those living in the local area and many visitors from outside Magrath in holiday and summer times. Unfortunately, the playground is beginning to show it's age, and some have expressed safety and play-value concerns, especially with the wooden structures. It is time for an upgrade.

The Magrath Lions Club has dedicated many recent fund-raising projects towards obtaining funds for a park upgrade and has already earmarked the funds raised to date to the playground.

At the meeting the history of the park was reviewed, a slide show video was presented, showing the current state of the park, by Lion Roger. Dale Blumell then presented proposed replacement alternatives and costs for discussion. It was suggested that the project be implemented in 2 phases each to cost about $6000. Cost sharing grants will be pursued in addition to new fund raising projects, for example, Dale Blumell recommended we send a letter of interest to the Town of Magrath to be considered for hosting a fund raising event at the Magrath Golf Course next summer. Roger Davies will update the Magrath Lions web page on this project with ongoing information as it becomes available. We plan to have our next meeting in early 2006, at which time a more formal project proposal will be available and implementation time frames will be discussed.

Please see [this page] http://magrath-ab.net/lions/lionpark.htm for project information and updates or contact Roger Davies for more information. See you in the Spring!

Costs: The proposed upgrade will be done in stages as funding becomes available.
