2009 Plaid Tidings

“The four-part harmony, guy group holiday musical returns! Thanks to a heavenly phone call from Rosemary Clooney, Sparky, Smudge, Jinx and Frankie are returning to earth in the delightful Forever Plaid sequel, Plaid Tidings. This time the quartet tunes their heavenly harmonies on holiday songs and carols, along with a hilarious tribute to The Ed Sullivan Christmas Spectaculars featuring the Rockettes, the Chipmunks and The Vienna Boys Choir. And, the boys whip up a Plaid Caribbean Christmas which puts the “Day-O” in Excelsis!

Great fun for the whole family!

Installation of Playground Equipment

On Saturday 26 Sep 2009 we have planned a community install of the additional playground equipment that has been purchased for the Lions Playground by the Magrath Lions Club. It basically involves digging a few holes, putting the new items in place, and filling the holes back up with cement. We have two metal shaded picnic tables and three additional stand alone play items to install; a 4 child spring bouncer, a dolphin spring bounce and a crazy cup.

Upgrade Sep 2009We have contracted to have the excavation done and holes dug on Friday evening, the 25th. If you have a shovel, rake and/or wheelbarrow we could use help that night moving topsoil around the park, installing the plastic timbers, and setting up for the cement.

On Saturday morning we hope to cement the equipment in and load the pea gravel in place. Because this playground is geared to your younger children in town, these new play items should be very popular. Questions? Want to help? Is my blog working?

Is your webpage/blog working? How do you know? Veronica Belmont of tekzilla.com has shown us the way .. again. She reports a new free utility website called ismyblogworking.com that checks for you and reports back all sorts of neat techie info. You just enter in the site you want to check on their main page, or append it to the end for a quick shortcut e.g. ismyblogworking.com/magrath-ab.net/news/blog

Yay .. along the same lines, I like the whatismyip.com website which is extremely handy if you need to know what IP address (kinda like a call display number to the web) you are using. You need this info if you want two computers to find and talk directly to each other over the internet. It is also a quick and easy way to see if your internet connection is still working.

And if it is working .. just how fast is it? Go to speedtest.net for a free utility to measure how long it takes to upload and download a test file. Cool.

Now, how can they afford to provide free services like these? I don’t know, but I like using them. Perhaps is is a public service provided by a beneficent business who make their money in other ways .. kind of like the content on this website.

Updated Magrath Pharmacy website

The Magrath Pharmacy website at magrath-ab.net/pharmacy has been updated using WordPress and the F2 Theme. It is not a complicated website, but the results are pleasing and the formatting is consistent and easy to maintain.

Roosters Country Marketplace coming

The Magrath Trading Company will undergo a personality change next month .. apparently changing names to Roosters Country Marketplace. The new owners will close down the store for about 2 weeks at the start of September and reopen with the new store fixtures and layout mid-month. Change is good – but my spouse will refuse to call it by the new name .. it will still be referred to as the MTCo by her.

The front page of the Westwind Weekly paper in their 27 Aug issue it is the lead story with a nice photo of the Mackenzie’s and a diagram of the proposed store layout.

Back to School!

Magrath children ages 5-18 or so are heading back to school on Monday the 31st of August – just a little earlier than last year. The initial classroom lists are now posted on the school doors (a big thing for my 6th grader) and many local stores are featuring back to school specials. There is also a school supplies 2009-10 list for Grades 1-6 available which is also important, unless you pre-ordered your supplies last year. My child pointed out that the Power School at ps.westwind.ab.ca website also tells you who the assigned teacher is .. but you need a username and password – which you can get from your last years report card. According to the Westwind Weekly 27 Aug issue, a new magrathhigh.ca website will also be available for  parents and students to check on assignments, homework, and test schedules.

Sorry kids: Have you finished your homework yet? Umm .. sure. Well, let’s just check out what the magrathhigh.ca homework page says .. Now if only the dog could eat your computer screen.

Integration with Joomla site

I am hoping to integrate the WordPress blog into my existing Joomla: magrath-ab.net/news site in some sort of seamless fashion. My first attempt using Joomla ‘Link to URL’ links to the WordPress blog, but not within the Joomla site with Parent Navigation. I like go try again and report back.

Welcome to WordPress Blogger

It is the end of August .. but a colder one than normal. The leaves on the trees are still green but our kids are back to school on the 31st and that means summer is really over now. I am supposed to be organizing the installation of the new Magrath Lions Club playground equipment (phase two) and also need to work on a plan to convince my spouse that my plan to upgrade my own home has more merit than just to bulldoze it down. Instead, I got up early and set up this blog. I really need to work on my priorities. This, however, is fun. WordPress came up in an article comparing Joomla vs Drupal vs WordPress. I use Joomla: see magrath-ab.net already and love it, but it does have a few warts, especially when it comes to novice users. Drupal I have tried in the past and was underwhelmed – perhaps I will re-examine it in the future. WordPress was new to me so this site was created to evaluate some of it’s features.

So far so good. However, it did make me manually create my database and username via ‘phpadmin’ and edit the php config files with ‘my favorite text editor’. Not likely an easy task for a novice. However, assuming those initial housekeeping tasks were done for you, say by someone like me, the subsequent configurations seem very user friendly and easy to use and update.
