Overview

The Town of Magrath is situated within easy driving distance to Lethbridge, Waterton Lakes National Park and Whitefish, Montana. Highway and rail access provides great potential for many light and high-tech industries. A stable quiet community that offers a quality of life second to none.

Magrath lies just 30 miles north of the Canada-U.S. International Boundary in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. It is situated along the major American north-south transportation corridor linking Alaska and Canada with the continental United States, about 60 miles east of the Waterton/Glacier International Peace Park (the world's first International Park system), and 20 miles south of Alberta's third largest city, Lethbridge, Alberta.

Magrath is a small community (pop approaching 2000) which stands above the rest. It is known for its natural beauty and for its outstanding quality of life. It is a place for both old and young. It is a community with and for children. Many families, and increasingly businesses, have established here in recent years. Magrath is a healing and a welcoming place; a place of the present, past and, most importantly, the future.

History

100 Year Centennial Logo

Magrath was established in 1899 by Mormon workers from Utah and Idaho who were recruited by the Alberta Railway and Irrigation Company to construct irrigation works in the areas. These workers were paid partly in cash and partly with land in the town.

This was the first major irrigation work in Canada and was made possible by the workers' experience with the extensive irrigation undertaken by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormon) in Utah and Idaho. Magrath residents have developed this community into a "Garden City" using irrigation and the excellent soil conditions
